Providence guided La Quintina to the path of two Juans. Both prominent figures of 15th-century Spain, both Andalusians, both alchemists in their own way, one of words, the other of sounds. The first, Juan de Mena (1411-56), is the author of the Labyrinth of Fortune, a successful epic and allegorical poem whose original source is preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Ms. Esp 229). The second, Juan de Triana (1460-94), was a great polyphonist, creator of marvelous counterpoints whose sounds can be found today in the famous La Colombina manuscript (Seville: Biblioteca Capitular y Colombina: Ms 57-6-23). While the paths of our two rhetoricians converge in many respects, a comparative study of their works reveals an even more striking affinity: they both depict, through different registers, the intricacies of the human comedy. As observers of the "spectacle of the world," Juan de Mena and Juan de Triana both evoke the past, present, and future, employing allegory to portray the human condition and using sarcasm to describe the broken or glorious destinies of their contemporaries. La Quintina thus invites you, under the watchful eye of Lady Fortune, to encounter 15th-century Spanish society! A performance directed by Thierry Péteau and created with the support of CNCM Voce (Pigna).
