Nicholas Ludford, Missa Sabato

Programme :
Missa Sabato (Lady Masses)
Distribution :
3 singers, portable organ

The Missa Sabato is part of a cycle of seven masses to the Virgin Mary, presented by Nicholas Ludford to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. The music, now held in the British Library's Royal Collection as four separate booklets (Roy. App. 45-8), reveals an intimate three-part composition. Examination of the original sources suggests that this music was intended for a service in the monarchs' private chapel. In such a case, the positive organ could be replaced by its portable counterpart, the organetto, and the choir by solo voices. La Quintina offers a performance in this configuration to preserve the gentle polyphony of Nicholas Ludford.
